SEM is more of a digital marketing plan rather than one online service.
For Example: SEO is “Search Engine Optimization” That is one aspect of a SEM program. SEM represents the entire search result page. From top to bottom. That page includes paid ads at the top, then local with a map and local listings displaying a website link and a phone number, then you see the organic listings, normally you will find a myriad of directories (Yelp, Yellow Pages, Home Advisor…) the organics will display social directories and the all important organic website listings.
These four areas are the architecture of a Google results page and these areas are also necessary for a successful SEM program.
When a client comes into our digital marketing company, most are looking for one particular service, like Google Adwords or they want better social management. But I will be quick to advise them that they need to look at digital marketing in a similar way we look at conventional marketing. It is more about the power of the marketing mix rather than one media choice. We know from marketing 101 that a customer does not buy a product or choose a service company by the reach of just one media option. It takes a combination of media all working together to communicate brand and credibility. It is the same with digital marketing.
Google has adopted a complex algorithm created by MOZ that grades a website based on the sites visibility on a search engine result page. This is sort of like a market share but more like what it sounds, “Visibility”.

Conventional Marketing to promote an online brand
I graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a marketing and communications degree. Started a full service advertising agency back in 1991 and we have marketed most every industry from real estate to computer software. Conventional marketing is not the same animal that it was back in 1991 but it is still the process of using broadcast, print and outdoor to reach a target audience. Many of the biggest and best online companies depend on their conventional broadcast and direct mail marketing for survival. They understand that in order to get brand dominance in the marketplace they need to market more than on line, they need a comprehensive traditional marketing plan that includes conventional marketing as well as online marketing. Some have found that online marketing combined with effective traditional marketing can be extremely powerful.
We are very different from other because our roots run deep in traditional marketing but we are also a successful and dominant digital marketing firm as well.
